View Full Version : Carbon for ozone effluent?

Boomer, what's your opinion on using carbon for the effluent from an ozone reactor/skimmer? I know in the article we were talking about in another thread, Randy advocates using it. However I've heard other prominent aquarists say it's not necessary. Just looking for one more vote one way or the other... :|

It is necessary. The ozone, as pointed out in Randy's article, takes the bromide ion, which is about 65 ppm and converts it to bromine bleach, which is something you do not want in your tank. The carbon reacts with this bromine bleach and converts it back to bromide. Ask yourself the question or ask them would they dump bleach in their reef tank ?
