So I finally broke down and bought the Canon 30D (my Rebel XT is on craigslist if anyone is interested). These are my first two pics out of the cam. I'm still trying to get the custom WB set and learn a few of the other features. One thing I love is ISO 3200, I can get quicker than 1/500 of a second and still have some depth of field. I'm sure there will be many more pics to follow, enjoy.

I have been extremely happy with the XT but I wanted the lower ISO noise that the 30D has. Plus it's just fun to change things up :)

Actually, the 30D is a 8.2MP cam (same as XT). The difference between 8 and 10 isn't as much as you would think, it would only be noticeable in extreme crops or huge prints, and still very little at that. It's quality, not quantity :) Oh, and these settings are about as bad as you can get. These were shot at ISO 3200 so I had to use a lot of noise reduction which softened the image a bit. These shots were really just tests to see how if the extremely high ISO is useable. These were just handheld shot as I get my remote in the next few days so I can use my tripod and get some better pics. I also have my new 24-105 F/4L IS lens coming tomorrow which will be fun to play with. Next on my list is a Sigma 150mm macro lens that I can use my 1.4x tele-converter and extension tubes. I should be able to fill the whole frame with some something as small as 1.1 cm :D I'll be able to get some very serious macro's with that!

Hey there Rick!

Nice photo!

The great thing about the 30D, other than the fact that you've mentioned the faster ISO speed, is the spot-metering. Not to mention a tested 100,000 shutter life!

Best,
Ilham

I just really like the overall feel of the 30D, it's bigger and easier to handle for me. But here is another fishy shot. I'm trying a whole new RAW processing method (Adobe Lightroom vs. DxO Optics Pro) and it's a bit of trail and error to learn it. So far I'm happy with the results.

Man, i wish i had a bit more money, because I would pick that camera up in a heartbeat from you on craigslist. That's the problem with being in school though and having a hobby like fish tanks.... not much money for anything else!

Great shots Rick, how do you like the Adobe Lightroom? Is it still bata or is this a production program your running?

Blazer88
03-05-2007, 04:29 PM
I used it for a while in Beta but now it's production. I think you can still get a trial version that is good for a month to try it out. I like how it takes the RAW image, lets me pick the processing, and then exports it right into CS2 for final editing. It has taken quite a bit of time from my workflow.

Funny you should ask :D I'm actually down in California on business right now and I had some time today to hit the Aquarium of the Pacific and give my new 24-105mm F/4L IS lens a workout. I filled my 2 gig card and it looks like I have about 200 pics to process when I get back tomorrow :) Not to mention the first 200 shots I got of some cool rocky beaches, I'm going to be busy for a while. I'll start another thread when I post my pics from the Aquarium, I think I have tons of cool ones that turned out great.

Time for a LightRoom tutorial;)

Blazer88
03-19-2007, 01:52 PM
lol. Having trouble are we? I find LR especially easy to use. Go to the import screen and import the RAW file. Click on the develop tab, make any color temp adjustments, play around with the tone curve. Then right-click to export for CS2. How easy is that? And since I haven't updated this thread in a while, here are a few new shots:

Hay pal, how do you get up that close. I can only get that close if coral is within several inch of the glass. Do you have a photo box that you use. I have a macro lens.

I don't use any type of box, I just get the lens as close to the coral as possible. I'll be getting some killer macro's when I get my Sigma 150mm F/2.8 macro with 1.4x tele-converter and my 68mm extension tubes this week...oh that will be some macro fun.

No actually that's what I have been doing for the most part, just thought there was more to it...and I thought you should do another tutorial :p

I'll see if I can whip one up. I think the only people on here using LR are you and I though. I actually found a ton of video tutorials on google that explain LR pretty well, I just haven't had the time to sit through all of them.
