Hello CW,
I did some testing today with my Salivert Test kits. I have a combo Test Kit from Salivert that test my Strotium and Calcium. My Calcium is 440meg/L. My Alk is 3.2 meg/L. My KH-9. My strotium is over 40. I was concerned what effect this would have on my reef. One friend said I would be fine. He said to watch my animals. I am assuming snails, crabs, starfish, and of course fish.
What is your oppinion please?
Thanks in Advance,
Ed Hahn

IMO your strontium should not be that High at all unless you are physically dosing Sr... And even then I think it would be hard to reach that high... An SR level of 40 I would think would be harmful... is it possibly that the test might have been wrong? I know its salifert and all but... Also you might want to try and test a fresh batch of ASW and find out the levels as well... FWIW Oceanic salt has Sr levels of 7-8 according to my Seachem kit... And I belive Mike (mojo) tested Oceanic for me a while back with SAlifert and came up with the same readings..

It probably is the test kit. I just switched to Oceanic Salt. I used Instant Ocean previously. I am on guard for any changes in my tank. I have strotium to dose but did not use it. I did not add anything to my tank after switching salts. I have not added Strotium for a long time. I have no other place to blame unless my kit is wrong. I am pretty certain it is my test kit.

I agree probley the test kit, correct me if I am wrong, I think at that high of a level stront. would precip out just like cal. or mag. What do you think Ed?

I think (trying to remember) IO from what RHF found had a level of 12-15 on average...

James and Illusion,
My tangs are a little stressed. It could be because I took my Stingray pump off and shut off my lights a couple times. I am certain it is my test kit. My kit is a older Salivert Strontium Test Kit. I will wait for a friend to test my strontium with his kit. I appreciate your oppinions.
thanks again,
Ed

Hi Ed, you alk is a little low. I think it should be at 4.0

4.0 seems high to me....but then maybe I just keep my levels at more of a NSW level.

Cesar - what levels do you run at? calc and alk and mag?

Ed, here is a strontium link:

If your strontium is indeed 40, then this is about the point at which a few animals start to exhibit toxicity. I would suggest validating this number with another test kit. If it is indeed that high, then you need to start working to bring it down. I don't think it is a red light emergency, but something you might want to start working on sooner than later. Most things don't really show toxicity to strontium until the ppm range gets into the hundreds. However, why take chances. Water changes will be the best way to bring this down if in fact it is as elevated as you fear.

Sincerely...Collin

Cesar,
I am pretty sure its a bad test kit. No, I have not been dosing strontium for a long time. I liked your link. My alk is 3.2. My calcium is 440. I see by your calculator that my numbers are different than I expected. My balanced Alk is 11.2 according to your link. Thanks I book marked it.
