Tell us about yourself:
Just your Everyday Eastern Oregon Boy, I am a happily Married 41 year old Power Plant Technician that finds myself Making Electricity as hard as trying to keep two Reef Tanks Happy. I enjoy the Outdoors and really enjoy Going to the Coast and Going Bottom fishing with ultra light gear. I have a passion for Old Mustangs I Currently have my old Hi school car It is 1965 Mustang V-8 with a 4 speed ( so much for gas economy) I just sold my 1970 Boss 302 For my Next big project in Life Building a New House.
How did you get involved in the saltwater hobby?
My Brother in-law had a 55 gallon Reeftank ( I finally have got him to step up to a 90 gallon cube) That was full of soft corals and He has a Very Nice Yellow Tang. That just gave me a big Bug! I knew then I had to get me one Now how big did I want to go? After getting The New Marine Aquarium by Mike Paletta I decided to go with the Biggest tank I could afford That was a 72" 125 gallon All-Glass with Dual over flows. I was then struck with the salt water sickness ( Hooked for life)
Tell us about your tank?
My Main Tank is a 72" 150 gallon All-Glass with Dual over flows My second Tank is 48" 75 gallon All-Glass with a signal over flow.
Both tanks Have Oceanic sumps
History: This is a Good test for your wife after starting a new Tank & Hobby! My 125 gallon Tank was set up March 1st of 2004 On Mothers day about 2 months into the tank setting up We came home from Mothers Day dinner and my Living room is flooded and both sump pumps we running almost Dry! The All-Glass tank had lost it's end seal and was leaking Badly. We went & bought a 75 gallon Tank to hold us till a Replacement Tank arrived. This was the next problem All-Glass was out of 125 Gallon Tanks But they did have a 150 gallon so Time for a up grade! It has since settled down And we haven't had any Major Tank excursions.
Lighting: Both of my Tanks have PFO Custom Light fixtures with 250 Watt Metal Halide And VHO Actinic supplementation
Circulation: My 150 Tank has Mag drive 24 For main circulation with a Mag drive 18 for support flow thru a 1/3 Hp chiller sending the chilled water to the center of my tank, For wave making I use 3/4" sea-swirls.
My 75 Gallon Tank Has a Mag Drive 18 Running a spray Bar and a 3/4" sea-swirl
Skimming is done on my 150 Tank with Redundant Aqua C Protien skimmers I also use Aqua C in My 75 Gallon
Extras: American Marine Ph controllers, And Salinity Monitor, Reefugiums,Are employed on my 150 for copods for My Mandarin.
Corals: I like SPS We have about 20 different Frags And small colonies in the SPS tank .
In the 150 Tank we Have LPS like Frog spawn, Branching Hammer, Torches, Elegance and a few softies , Zoo's Mushrooms and some toadstools and some Leathers,
Inverts: All Kinds of Shrimp with 3 mated up Pairs of Pistol Shrimps & Consensual Gobies, Many Different snails, Crabs, Anemonies, Starfish, Urchins, and some Clams.
Fish: Tangs, Clowns, Wrasses, Gobies, cowfish, Mandarin, Rabbit, Pygmy Angel, Anthias, and Cardinals
How did you become involved with Reef Frontiers?
I was In Aquatic Dreams When this Coral Guy( Guess who) gave me a Card and said hey go & Check out this site and I was just getting started so that's how I came up my Name. It has been a very good learning tool fore me and I enjoy sharing what I have Learned. This is truly a Hobby you could never learn it all and that's what make it so fun.
What is your reef keeping philosophy?
I try to be patient that is my biggest weakness I have tried dosing calcium & Buffer but I have gone Back to the good old KISS theory and just do weekly water changes to keep my Calcium & Alkalinity levels in spec.
What is your dream tank?
Boy I cant wait on this one I hope to be building a new house in the next year and I plan on Having a custom Tank built right at 300 gallons 8' long by 36" wide by 24" deep I hope to start a thread on this when I begin.
Do you have any advice for others?
Never be embarrass to ask any reef question! Someone has done it or knows the answer and if it can save the life of any tank mate its worth it!
