Tell us about yourself:
First , what an honor to be asked as MOTM :) We are Chris Stewart and Barbara Lang from Wilmington Delaware. I'm self employed, doing home remodeling and Barb is a V.P. of a Social Marketing firm. We spend most of our free time around home or in the park tyring to keep our extremely spastic Jack Russel terrier (Riley) tired :). We also have a beautiful black cat we picked up from the pound named Koko.
How did you get involved in the saltwater hobby?
It's all Barbs fault!! LOL
I've been keeping African Cichlids for about 20 years now. When we meet, Barb fell in love with my fish tank and wanted one of her own. About a year later we moved in togeather and decided to set up a tank just for Barb. She wanted the "pretty fish" so we got a 29g with all the works (skilter, Damsels, ect...) It's been 7 years since, and most of our retirement money :)
Tell us about your tank
We have two tanks in our living room. One is a 75g Tridacnid clam tank, and the other is a 180g mixed reef tank. Both tanks run off of a common sump in the basement. The sump consists of two 100g Rubbermaid tubs and one 50g Rubbermaid tub. The return pump is a Sequence Hammerhead. Flow in the 75g comes from one Seio 1500 and 2 Seio 820's. Flow in the 180g is from 2 Blueline 100's on a closed loop and one Seio 2600. Lighting on the 75g is 2- 150 watt 10k MH with 2-65W actinic. The 180g is 3- 150 watt 14k MH with 2-140W VHO actinic. 3L of carbon is changed once a month along with 350g of iron oxide phosphate remover. Skimmer is a modified ASM G6. We do about an 8% water change every week.
We have a wide mix of corals and fish in the 180g. A mated pair of Flame Angelfish, 7 Lyretail Anthias, 1 Powder Blue Tang, 1 Sailfin Tang, 2 quarter sized Hippo Tanges, 1 Flame Hawkfish, 2 Roral Gramma's, and 2 Percula's that live in a LTA we've had for 7 years. Along with SPS,LPS and a few soft corals
The 75g is pretty much just clams. We have mostly Maximas, some Croceas, Squamosa's and a Derasa. There is a S. Haddoni Anemone in there that was removed from the 180g for eating most of the fish, but it seems content now with its new pair of Polymnus clownfish.
How did you become involved with Reef Frontiers?
Barry Neigut from ClamsDirect said i should check it out as he was very impressed by the knowledge and dedication regarding the hobby at Reef Frontiers.
What is your reef keeping philosophy?
Thats a very tuff question! I dont know if i have one. All I try to do is keep water quality as close to NSW as i can, and try to make sure that the needs of the animals i keep are met to the best of my ability.
What is your dream tank?
We really love the system we have now, but im sure there is something bigger down the road. I keep teasing Barb that she shouldn't go away on business trips for more then a few days unless she wants to come home to a glass floor and a basement full of water lol !!
Do you have any advice for others?
Yes, before you buy anything else to put in your tank, spend a few $ and get a quarantine tank. They are very simple and cheap to set up and can save you SO much money. I have one, I do it, I learned the hard way. Also always keep an open mind and don't be afraid to ask questions or question people. I've found that the people that really know what they are talking about will gladly answer your questions.
