Tell us about yourself:
My name is Ron Buckle (32). I live in Ontario, Canada. I’m married (See, it’s ok ladies, I fooled someone else into thinking I was good looking) to Tara Buckle (29 again). We have 2 beautiful daughters, Samantha (5) and Allyssa (2). I am one of the lucky ones to be able to work in this hobby. I love my job (it’s only been 6 months) I have only been keeping marine tanks for about 8 months now. So I can barely call it a reef tank. Other hobbies I have are Scuba Diving, Golfing and camping.
How did you get involved in the saltwater hobby?
A year before I got involved a friend of mine converted his old freshwater tank to a saltwater tank. As he upgraded his equipment I was given the chance to get it from him. I eventually set up my own tank.
Tell us about your tank
My tank is 36”x24”x26” 3 side Starfire glass. Internal Over flow with 2x 1” Durso’s. 3” Euro brace on 3 sides. Drilled for a closed loop in the back and bottom. Star board bottom (black) and back painted black. Sfiligoi Soleset 1x250w, 2x24w Actinics, 2xMoonlight. Mag 7.5 return. Sedra 9000 for closed loop. H&S 150 2001 external skimmer, Red Sea Ozonizer, 2x Two Little Fishes Reactor, One running Carbon for the skimmer and ozone, one running Fauna Marin Zeolith Ultra Lith. All run by an Aquatronica controller.
How did you become involved with Reef Frontiers?
I was doing a search about “The Cycle” on Google. Lead me to many sites. Reef Frontiers was the first on the list. I read through the pages of information. Bookmarked it; then tried other sites. All of the other sites either didn’t have enough information, or, didn’t want to you find it. (without paying a membership fee) So I came back here and have been here ever since. This is still my main info site. I think always will.
What is your reef keeping philosophy?
I am too new to even have a philosophy. But, I am a firm believer of growing with your tank. There are 1000’s of reasons why you should upgrade or buy that next fish or coral. If you don’t have the means or the knowledge, let someone else have it until you can or know all you need to keep what you want. It’ll save you money, and save lives. I owe a lot to Reef Frontiers, Anthony Calfo, Sanjay Joshi, Marc Melev, Big T, Nikki (NaH20), Gabby, Krish, Jiddy, Steve S, Wrightme43, Scooterman, Chris and Barb, the administrators of this site and many many more. Too many to list. But believe me you all have inspired me some how.
What is your dream tank?
Being in the business I am in I see a lot of people dream tanks. They are all so nice and wonderful to wonder what it would be like. Right now, I have my dream tank.
When my corals outgrow this tank. I will triple the size I have now. 72”x 36”x 26” External overflow Drilled for closed loop in the Euro brace. 2x250w, 1x400w, 4x58w Actinics, 8x Moonlights, Shuran Jetsream 1(unless something better comes along) H&S Skimmer, and what ever the pump of the month is at the time.
Do you have any advice for others?
Yes, Follow Nikki’s (NaH20) Links and you will do great. (haha) Never be afraid to ask a question. Never be afraid to answer a question you think you know, if you are incorrect, you’ll know when someone else gives the correct answer.
