Common names: Paper Shell Snail, Finger Nail Snail, Mini-Abolone

These small reef-safe herbivores scavenge on microalgae including diatoms. They are nocturnal, fast moving, and reproduce well without the presence of predators. These Trochoidean gastropods have a slug-like appearance with a small cap-shaped shell. Because of the shape of this shell, Stomatella have a special defense mechanism (instead of hiding in the shell). They can break off the rear portion of their foot when threatened. The broken piece then wiggles to distract the predator, while the main body tries to get away.
