      Scientific Name: Sphaeramia nematoptera
Max. size: 8.5 cm TL (male/unsexed)
      Environment: reef-associated; marine; depth range 1 - 14 m
Distribution: Western Pacific: Ryukyu Islands to Java and New Guinea; Belau to Pohnpei in Micronesia.
Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 7-8; Dorsal soft rays (total): 9; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 9-10. Distinctive species with tail fins and brightly colored red eyes. Broad black central body band and head yellow.
Biology: Forms aggregations among the branches of Porites nigrescens and P. cylindrica in sheltered bays and lagoons. Disperses at night to feed close to the bottom. Has been reared in captivity. Popular aquarium fish.
Aquarium Care: A very durable species that is great for a beginner aquarist. This fish may do better when kept in small groups. A pecking order will be established where the largest specimen is the most dominant. Aggression among the group comes in the form of the occasional chase or nudge, and not war-like behavior of other fish species. Will spend time out in the open. Feed a variety of meaty foods (in the wild it eats small invertebrates near the seafloor).
