      Scientific Name:Melichthys vidua
Max. size: 40.0 cm TL (male/unsexed)
      Environment: reef-associated; marine ; depth range 4 - 60 m
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: East Africa south to Durban, South Africa and east to the Hawaiian, Marquesan and Tuamoto islands, north to southern Japan, south to the southern Great Barrier Reef in Australia and New Caledonia; throughout Micronesia.
Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 31-35; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 28-31. Juveniles with dark lines radiating from eye and dark lines on anal and soft dorsal fins.
Biology: Occur in seaward reefs to depths greater than 60 m. Common in coral-rich areas exposed to currents. Diet consists mainly of algae and detritus but also takes in crustaceans, octopuses, sponges, and fishes. Oviparous
Aquarium Care:Has a temperature range of 72 - 81°F (22 - 27°C) and has a natural diet of zooplankton, small fishes, and invertebrate. Requires a meaty diet, including fortified brine shrimp, mysis, chopped fish or shrimp flesh, and meaty type frozen carnivore foods with two or three feedings per day. One of the more peaceful triggerfishes. And, if fed well, it makes an interesting reef fish, yet still maintains a liking for shrimp! A good community fish, however, it should be the last fish introduced and may have an appetite for much smaller fishes.
