      Scientific Name: Anampses melanurus
      Max. size: 12.0 cm TL (male/unsexed)
      Environment: reef-associated; marine ; depth range 15 - 40 m
      Distribution: Pacific Ocean: Indonesia to the Marquesas and Society Islands, north to Ryukyu Islands, south to Scott Reef; Palau in Micronesia, closely related to Anampses lineatus from the west Indian Ocean. Range extends to Easter Island.
      Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 12. The primary phase of this species closely resembles that of A. meleagrides, but never has a uniformly yellow tail, and the color pattern does not change much with growth or sex. Recognized by the yellow bar on the base of the tail.
      Biology: Occurs in seaward reefs. Also in deep coastal to outer reef slopes and drop-offs. Solitary or in pairs in the surge zone, rarely to 30 m. Swims in small groups, each with several females and a single dominant male. Feeds on small crustaceans, mollusks and polychaetes. Buries in sand at night
      Aquarium Care:: Has a temperature range of 75 - 82°F (25 - 28°C) and has a natural diet of benthic invertebrate. Requires a meaty diet, including finely chopped fish or shrimp flesh, fortified brine shrimp, mysis, black worms and other meaty type frozen foods with two or three feedings per day. These burrowing wrasses are hardy, adapt well to aquarium life, peaceful, takes a wide variety of foodstuffs, resistant to parasitic infections and compatible with other wrasses. May have an appetite for tubeworms. Provide a fine-grained substrate of at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) in depth
