      Hemigymnus fasciatus
Max. size: 80.0 cm TL (male/unsexed)
      Environment: reef-associated; marine ; depth range 1 - 20 m
Gazetteer Indo-Pacific: Red Sea south to Inhaca Island, Mozambique and east to Tahiti.
Morphology: Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 11. Lips thick with age. Several color phases with age and sex. Basic color pattern changes little with growth although the posteriormost white bands disappear on large individuals.
Biology: Found mostly on coral reefs and reef flats to at least 20 m depth. Feeds mainly on small crustaceans, mollusks and echinoderms. Juveniles secretive on inshore reefs. Large adults swim openly on reefs, singly or in small loose aggregations
Aquarium Care: Has a temperature range of 75 - 83°F (24 - 28°C) and has a natural diet of benthic invertebrate. Requires a meaty diet, including fortified fish and invertebrate flesh, with two or three feedings per day. Sometimes bury themselves if frightened. Usually, they sleep under rock shelves, on or under a coral branch, in a crevice, or directly on the sand surface, however, providing a deep sandbed of about 8 inches (20 cm) of fine-grained sand would be a good idea. One per tank. Probably better left in the wild, as it is a difficult fish to maintain
