    Talking Photography Critique Threads

    Hello all!

Nikki mentioned doing this on IRC a few weeks back, and I never heard anything else from her, so I figured I'd go ahead and start it anyways. I'd like to have these moved to a specialized subforum, but for now we'll just use this one. =)

So, here's the deal. If you have a picture you want people to take a look at and make reccomendations for how you could make it better, please feel free to post it! If you have a specific area you want to ask about, go ahead and mention it.

The higher quality its posted in, the better, since that gives people more ability to work with it in photoshop or some other post-processing application.

    The rules:

    • Since we're doing these in the general Photography forum, please prefix your subject line with "Critique:" so we know what the thread is about.
    • One picture to a thread, and no hijacking please. If you want to have one of your own pictures looked at, please start a new thread.
    • Please make it a somewhat workable photograph. If its ridiculously blurry, you're just going to get told to use a tripod, change your ISO, etc. Those are easily searchable answers or can be asked about in a more general sense. (In other words, if NaH2O could critique it, you probably shouldn't post it. :P)
    • Please post as much data about the photo as you know. At bare minimum, include what kind of camera/lens you used. At best, include exposure information (shutter, F-stop, ISO), and focus information if you have it.
    • Please at least include some idea as to how you might've wanted to improve the photo to give us something to start with.
    • If you're making changes to a posted photograph, please list in as much detail as you can what changes you made.

Please feel free to comment if you have any ideas for how we might make this work well, and please hop in and comment if you see one of these threads pop up!

Hopefully this ends up being useful for everybody!

    -Dylan

i must have wasted $100 in film when i first started taking pictures of my tanks. I had so many crappy shots i'm talking like 5-6 out of 24 would only be good, but now i have like 8-9 that are good. So i am improving. lol

That's not bad at all! I've found that maybe 5% of the pictures I take are ones I'm even willing to show to people, and even less than that are ones I'm particularly happy with. I think that's one of the major things that's driven me away from film and into a digital SLR really.

Don't feel bad Nick...I have taken 70 shots one time of my tank and was only able to post 5 of them. I think a tripod makes a hell of a difference though. When I propped up my camera and set the timer like Sherman suggested, it made a world of difference.

Oh sure...make it look like I don't do anything .

Looking forward to getting my fish photos critiqued....they need all the help they can get.

I also wanted to mention to those taking part in photo criticism...that's exactly what it is....criticism. This way we can all learn how to take better pictures. I'll be following along with the critiques, as I have no ability to help someone else...unless it is something easy, like....your picture is blurry .

...time to make sure my camera battery is charged

Everybody's afraid to post any pictures?

I know somebody out there must be fearless enough to start the ball rolling here. =)

ohh shoot i'm just reading the rules .

well it was taken with a Canon powershot S400, it says that it has a zoom lens 3x (who knows what the heck does that mean ) ohh and a 4.0 mega pixels.
When i did that i used the the lens very close and with my hands (before i read Sherman uses a chair or something to hold the camera ) .
I was trying to focus on the stinkin zoos but as you can see it came blurry and for some reason it always ends up like that.
I don't know how to use photoshop and i have tried but i think i need a kinder garden explanation to understand it .
