    Raising Salinity

could you address raising the salinity in an existing tank?

No more than 1 actual unit / week, so it would take you 4 weeks. You are /were at 1.024 and need to get to 1.028. ie., 1.024-->1.025-->1.026--->1.027--->1.028.

    This will make it easier

    http://www.saltyzoo.com/SaltyCalcs/SalinityAdjust.php

Make sure you use the same units, as in ppt or Sg

Don't use Sg, use ONLY ppt in the window. You get funny answers with Sg. So, at 30 ppt and you what to go to 35 ppt @ 50 gal / week WC.

Sg vs Salinity table. Take your Sg reading and find it in the far left column. Then go to ONLY the column for 25 C/77F. This is for refracts and swing arms and NOT floating hydrometers. For floating hydrometers you take the reading from the left column also and then you MUST go to the column that is the same temp as the tank temp.

i always raise salinity using normal evaporation and topping off with mixed saltwater matched to the current salinity level at the time of top off... seems the most gradual to me

Does it really have to be that slow? I'm like dust I never go away....
My salinity was /is 1.0267 with a cheap Specific Gravity Meter. My temp. is down to 79F
The reason I am asking is because I want to learn.
    Thanks in advance

Boomer...I meant the ad, not your chemistry link . That's always been there, hasn't it? I don't think I'm that old yet....although I do forget where I leave my keys quite often . I can edit it out for you if you'd like

Just a little box with an arm on it that swings up and down, however I rinse it with distilled water and take 5 readings. They all come out the same.

That was not there when I posted it at first. That is what happens if you take a pic/jpeg from RC and post it elsewhere. I fixed it

This is a pic of a coral watch it change on us. It is there now

Here is that table again to see. I forgot that in a short time they get replaced with an RC logo. Usually it happens as soon you post it.

    Hello;

A fish only tank --- fish can adjust quickly and no harm --- "A lot of reading and years of experience."

Reef --- I change 2-ppt a day. "Take it with a grain of Salt!"

"We could go out for a nice Seafood dinner if you don't buy that bucket of Salt Mix!"

    "Wife"

    Enjoy!

There is a difference between adjusting and stressing the fish unnecessarily and the reason behind 1 ppt / day as it is less stressful and requires less of a shift in osmoregulation.
