If the data could be consolidated and written to something like Mongo, you could build a pretty simple interface in Meteor or something else Node based. Would work significantly better on mobile immediately.

You'd need facebook sign-in obviously, no one wants to remember another password anymore. Granted you could also have regular sign in w/ email and password. I think the key might be write-throughs to facebook. Maybe write more popular posts to facebook or something? You'd just need some way to integrate facebook without completely switching over to facebook. The more content gets written to facebook, the more people are likely to come to the site.

Using Node and opening sockets would mean a more fluid interface. This could mean people are a little less scared of it (though not sure).

Mobile is the make or break though of course.

Anyone else here an SDE that would wanna try to help make something like this? haha

Its a vbBulletin site. The things you mentioned are available stock with upgrades and don't require re engineering the wheel....

Anything based on PHP (excluding facebook) has no place in the modern world haha.

I've never seen a vBulletin site that felt modern. Also, using a Node framework wouldn't mean reinventing the wheel, it would mean writing probably less than 1000 lines of code to accomplish the same thing the entirety of vBulletin contains and much, much more.

The database access alone would take 100 lines of code.
    Your ambition is admirable though

How? Does vBulletin not use MySQL?

Granted I haven't worked directly with vBulletins db schema but I know you can SSH in and just mysql dump it. The parsing from there couldn't be too bad. I've parsed significantly worse without the aid of queries.

The only complicated part would be linking users to the next system, but I still think you would essentially let users "claim" their emails w/ email verification. All their posts would still be preserved and whatnot.

I dunno, I've been watching these sort of forums die for the last few years meanwhile I've built multiple similar niche things for clients that see regular success. I'm not saying it'd be easy but it wouldn't be impossible.

Because everything is configurable and nothing is stored logically, its stored such that it can be pieced and parted out with a back end gui environment.
Have you looked around the site, or just at the postings? User profiles and settings, messaging, libraries and galleries? Notifications? Beyond that there is an entire administrative side you don't see. There is a reason why large forums use forum software, and don't just throw together something custom. Anyone can build a messaging board, it took years of lots of developers and community contributions to build something with as many features as vbbulletin.
Updgrades, or switching on integration features, and switching to a responsive theme (or a custom built one) would do all you are wanting without basically starting over... no lines of code. (oh, and IMO, its just that forums do not look modern, not that vbBulletin can't)
Be all for naught anyway, because anyone young enough to care about a modern look doesn't spend any time on forums anyway. Its a dying media.
*shrug* I've been doing Dev for 20 years, nothing is ever as simple as you think

I really don't think converting and reorganization, complete changeover would do little but cost money we don't have. We thought this when we upgraded to vb4 from 3, it was a huge mess and very expensive and if anything frustrated users into not coming back. I may be hard headed but I'm not converting this forum to FB, I've seen a few that converted and died just as fast.

Converting to facebook doesn't sound anything like facebook integration to me.
Being able to share a post from RF on Facebook is only going to drive traffic back. *shrug*
r2r does it. I don't visit their forum terribly often, but when I see something interesting on my facebook feed, I do.
Not my call. This form of media is dying. People don't want to research, they want someone to just answer the question. They don't want to discuss or learn... They want instant gratification, and that isn't something they will ever get here.

Your right, there was an issue with Facebook integration, security or something I had to disable it, the integration part is easy as flipping a switch (look at your top right of the front page, and at the bottom of a reply)
I have to do a security update this weekend so hopefully the past issues are resolved. The replacement with Facebook I won't do, sorry I said that wrong, trying to do too many things at once

This forum used to be so alive! I was on it all the time along with a bunch of others, and I loved having local get-togethers and meetings and frag swaps... I miss you all!

Facebook has been the source of the blame for the forums demise, it is sad. This use to be the go to place for aquariasts, many from the northwest. It is still alive, but we certainly don't have the following we use to have, that's for sure.

First, there isn't anything in them, and second, that rule has been off forever.
