This message or really for Network Geeks.

Just curious if this bored has any other computer geeks besides me :). If you are and have worked with VoIP in a small buisness I would be interested in talking with you. Right now all that is really being offered is Enterprise scalled VoIP solutions. I'm working with a Small Business and right now, the only real company that has a small buisness solution is Avaya and Inter-Tel. Just wondering if any other network junkies out there have done research or implemented VoIP into a small buisness and how was it designed? Thanks,
Bobby

I write VoIP control software that integrates with Cisco's AAVID architecture for a living. I'm only really familiar with Cisco's VoIP offering, but I know about all there is to know about that.

We've been targeting the small to mid-sized business sector with most of our offerings, so its apparently not out of sight as far as price goes, although I haven't the foggiest what it really costs.

Most of what I'm seeing still has to backhaul to the PSTN somewhere along the line though. You can do IP->IP voice, but because there's no guaranteed end-to-end QoS on the internet at large, quality is usually questionable, especially if you're adding any sort of video on top of the audio stream. We've done a bit over VPN, but it sucks, frankly.

General VoIP isn't ready for prime time in my opinion until they fix the QoS issues, but its great for single-office stuff where you don't want to deal with a PBX, or for multi-office situations that are linked to a private network via frame of point-to-point circuits and you have some control over the queueing.
