This topic seems to be generating alot of threads and responses. How about a seperate forum all to it's own. Then we can put all the threads together for people new to the forum or looking to research opinions.

Yea it seems to be the big debate on a lot of boards. I guess I am a little guilty of it, lol. Dan I dont want to create a forum just for it, its a aprt of the overall reefing scheme and should remain thier, folks will find it no problem will the use of our search engine.

take care

There is only so much can be said about DSB. All the pros and cons are out there if anybody want to spend the minimal effort to find them. We can argue until we are blue in the face and the facts remain the same. Like everything else, if you understand what you are doing, and the limitation of what ever method you use, then you will be fine.

Well you guys know what side im on.......cough cough...

I agree with Minh also. And again, sometimes it all comes down to a person's own preference, and one can't change that.

two little sayings....

There are two sayings that I have:

* You are entitled to your opinion, even when it is wrong!

* You believe your opinion to be right, else you would not have that opinion!

(tongue firmly in cheek ;) )

I agree totally with a persons right to choose, that is 100% an indivdual thing. The reason I talk to much about DSB is that thier is not enough info out thier on the limitations, or exactly what a DSB does. As with anything in this hobby if a person has the correct info about the pro's and cons then they can make an educated decision for themselves. And which they go is all good to me. Darn..I knew what they could and couldnt do and still tried one myself.

Craig Great to see ya on the board and a big Welome to ya

Well as for empiracal data, my DSB, is continuously releasing what I believe to be bubbles for free nitrogen, I have not testred the bubbles.

If my assumption is true then the reported benefit of a denitrifying sand bed has been realized. As for metals, no way to test and so I can't say. So far so good at this point.

:)   :D

Thanks for the welcome Poo!

I will have a DSB in the future, but it will be located remotely (in sump) so I can replace it every couple of years...

I wonder how many of the 53% have had sandbeds four years or more.

I'll not do another one.

I keep other tanks without dsb I should mention.

I have several tanks with both and like them all :) They serve different purposes and have pros and cons. Every system is different even two set up exactly the same will diverge over time (less than a year) IME. Do the research and plan what you want to keep in the future and make the educated choice is my advice FWIW.

Kevin

i will be removing mine. i plan on having over 4000gph in my 125. i do not think my DSB will stay there. it will also get undermined by the CLS's i am putting behind the LR. my wifes new tank does not have a DSB in it either. i like the look, but not the possible risks. i realize i have already messed up with the LR imbedded into the DSB on this tank, this is why i am going to remove it before all he acros encrust totally onto the LR.
