Tell us a little about your tank, such as size, lighting and other tank mates.

One rule of thumb would be when you start getting a nice layer of coralline algea forming on rocks and glass.

I have a 20 gallon tank with a 24" T5 fixture. I had heard about the coralline growth before and will probably use that as an indicator. I'm running mainly zoas and LPS.
